Intrepid is the largest producer of potassium chloride, (also known as muriate of potash), in the United States. The plant was originally built by the Texas Gulf Sulphur Company in 1963 as a typical underground mine. The same year it opened, a massive gas explosion trapped 25 men underground, killing 18 of them.
