My research has led me to "Transite" which is a high density non-asbestos board. (It was once made with asbestos.) I found a source for 4' x 8" x 1/4" sheets of Transite, but they do not cut it to size. Transite has the consistency of concrete and cutting requires the use of a diamond blade. Helpful.
