Activity of Metals

The most active metals are so reactive that they readily combine with the O 2 and H 2 O vapor in the atmosphere and are therefore stored under an inert liquid, such as mineral oil. These metals are found exclusively in Groups IA and IIA of the periodic table. Metals in the second class are slightly less active.

1.2: A First Look at the Periodic Table

The periodic table is not simply a grid of elements arranged numerically. In the periodic table, the elements are arranged in horizontal rows called periods, and into vertical columns called groups. Groups IIA, IIIA, and IVA

Tin and lead are much less reactive than any of the groups IA, IIA, or IIIA metals. ... According to the argument that elements become more metallic and therefore more active as we go down a column of the periodic table, lead should be more reactive than tin. Lead reacts with air to form a thin coating of PbO and/or PbCO 3, which protects the ...

Element Families on the Periodic Table

An element group is a column of elements on the periodic table. There are 18 element groups, which appear on the periodic table as numbers listed above the element columns. For example, the first column is group 1, I, or IA, depending on the numbering system. For the most part, element families and element groups are the same thing.
