What is a "charge cycle" of a lead-acid battery?

I'm trying to develop an algorithm that would roughly estimate the health of a lead-acid battery tied to an inverter backup system. It seems that my 200battery pack stays at 100% state of charge (SoC) most of the time. And when there is a short (a couple of minutes) power cut, it goes down from 100% to 99% (or worse, 98%).

The Pros and Cons of Lead-Acid and Lithium-Ion Batteries

The environmental risk is lower than sending them to a landfill because a single lead battery has the potential to affect the groundwater of an entire area. In contrast to lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries are only 5% recyclable. However, lithium-ion batteries are also relatively new to the market and have a longer life span.

BU-307: How does Electrolyte Work?

Lead Acid. Lead acid uses sulfuric acid. When charging, the acid becomes denser as lead oxide (PbO 2) forms on the positive plate, and then turns to almost water when fully discharged. The specific gravity of the sulfuric acid is measured with a hydrometer. (See also BU-903: How to Measure State-of-charge). Lead acid batteries come in flooded ...

Lead acid. You can store a sealed lead acid battery for up to 2 years. Since all batteries gradually self-discharge over time, it is important to check the voltage and/or specific gravity, and then apply a charge when the battery falls to 70 percent state-of-charge, which reflects 2.07V/cell open circuit or 12.42V for a 12V pack.

Can the Lead-acid Battery Compete in Modern Times?

The optimum operating temperature for the lead-acid battery is 25*C (77*F). Elevated temperature reduces longevity. As a guideline, every 8°C (15°F) rise in temperature cuts the battery life in half. A VRLA, which would last for 10 years at 25°C (77°F), would only be good for 5 years if operated at 33°C (92°F).
